EES: running now
The Entry/Exit System began a progressive launch on 12 October 2025 and, according to the European Commission, became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It replaces passport stamping and automatically identifies overstayers.
For each non-EU traveller it records name, travel document data, fingerprints, facial images, and the date and place of entry and exit. It also records refused entries.
EES is done at the border. There is nothing to fill in online beforehand. Allow extra time at the first crossing.
ETIAS: not in operation
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visitors who do not need a visa. The EU's official site says it is currently not in operation and that no applications are being collected.
- Any website that accepts an ETIAS application today is not the official service. Do not pay it.
- ETIAS is for visa-exempt travellers only. If you need a Schengen visa, you apply for the visa instead.
- Reporting in October 2026 says the EU dropped its earlier target of the last quarter of 2026 and that launch is now more likely in 2027. The planned fee is EUR 20 and the authorisation is expected to last three years. These details can change, so check the official site.
What to do
- Find out whether your passport needs a Schengen visa or is visa-exempt.
- If visa-free, bookmark the official ETIAS page and wait for the launch announcement.
- Never pay a third party to get ETIAS ahead of time.

أسئلة وأجوبة
Is ETIAS mandatory now?
No. The official EU site says ETIAS is not in operation and applications are not being collected.
Do I need to register for EES before I fly?
No. EES data is captured at the border, so there is no online form to complete in advance.
Is EES the same as an arrival card?
No. EES is a border registration system, not a form you fill in. ETIAS, when it starts, will be a travel authorisation, which is also different from an arrival card.
