Schengen visa refused? Reasons, appeal and what to do next

A refusal feels final, but the letter you received tells you exactly why. Every Schengen country uses the same standard form, so you can read the reason, decide whether to appeal, and fix the problem before you apply again.

What the refusal letter says

The EU standard refusal form lists 11 boxes. The consulate ticks the ones that apply. In plain words they are:

  1. A false, counterfeit or forged travel document was presented.
  2. The purpose and conditions of the stay were not justified.
  3. Proof of enough money for the stay, the return or onward travel was not provided.
  4. You have already used the 90 days allowed in the current 180-day period.
  5. An entry-refusal alert about you exists in the Schengen Information System (SIS).
  6. A Member State considers you a threat to public policy, internal security or public health.
  7. Proof of adequate, valid travel medical insurance was not provided.
  8. The information you gave about the purpose of the stay was not reliable.
  9. Your intention to leave before the visa expires could not be established.
  10. You did not prove you could not apply for a visa in advance (this applies to border applications).
  11. The visa holder asked for the visa to be revoked.

Reasons applicants most often report

News and travel sources list the same problems again and again. They are not official statistics, but they match the boxes above:

  • Bank balance too low, or money of unclear origin.
  • A vague or unconvincing reason for the trip.
  • Few signs you will return home, such as job, family or property.
  • Details that do not match across documents (dates, salary, addresses).
  • An itinerary that tries to cover too many cities in a short time.
  • Hotel bookings that do not cover the whole stay, or an incomplete invitation.
  • Travel insurance that does not meet the requirement or does not cover the full trip.
  • Applying to the wrong country. The usual rule is to apply to the country where you will spend the most days.
  • Earlier refusals, overstays or visa violations.

News reports in 2024 and 2026 described Pakistan as having one of the highest Schengen refusal rates. If you are applying from Pakistan, a complete, consistent file matters even more.

Can you appeal?

Yes, in most cases. The form states that you may appeal as provided for in the national law of the country that refused you. Each country must write in your letter the legal reference, the appeal procedure, the authority to appeal to and the deadline. Read those lines first, because the deadline is often short.

Check your own letter for the appeal wording. If the visa was cancelled at your own request (the last box on the form), there is normally nothing to appeal.

Appeal or apply again?

An appeal asks the authority to review the same decision. It helps when the refusal was a clear mistake, for example a document you did submit was overlooked. If the reason is a weak file, such as low funds or an unclear purpose, a new application with the problem fixed is usually more practical. Either way, never submit documents you cannot prove are genuine. A forged or doubtful document is itself a refusal reason and can make later applications harder.

  1. Read the ticked reason and the appeal deadline on your letter.
  2. Write down what the consulate could not see in your file.
  3. Fix it with real evidence: bank statements that show regular income, a day-by-day itinerary that fits your leave, bookings you can verify, and insurance for the whole period.
  4. Apply to the correct country and keep every detail consistent.
  5. Keep the refusal letter. Later applications ask about earlier refusals.

Protect yourself from visa scams

  • No agent can guarantee a Schengen visa. Be careful with anyone who promises one.
  • Never pay for fake bank statements, fake bookings or forged letters.
  • Book appointments only through the consulate or its official application centre.

सवाल और जवाब

Can I reapply immediately after a Schengen visa refusal?

The sources we read set no official waiting period. The practical advice is to fix the cause on your refusal letter first. A new application with the same weak points is likely to get the same result.

Does a refusal stay on my record?

Consulates keep a record of earlier decisions and the application form asks about previous refusals, so answer honestly. A single refusal does not by itself bar you from applying again.

Which country should I apply to?

Usually the country where you will spend the most days. If you split your stay equally, apply to the country you enter first. Applying to the wrong country is a commonly reported refusal reason.
